Abstract
1,017,255. Digital electronic computers. BAILEY METER CO. Feb. 22, 1963 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 7220/63. Heading G4A. [Also in Division G3] A data handling system for process control utilizes a magnetic drum with tracks for storage of input and calculated data, and programme data, the system comprising a number of sub-systems each operating more or less independently of the others and having its own programme tracks and arithmetic units (where necessary) so that the number of subsystems needing to operate in real-time manner is minimized. As shown, sub-systems 14-24 have tracks on a magnetic drum 10, a further display sub-system 26 receives data from busses 34, 42, 50 and 58 for continuous display of selected data. The drum tracks are each divided notionally into 100 blocks containing each one word of 20 bits, the sync signals S, A, R from 12 corresponding to bits, start of word, and start of revolution respectively. The subsystems in general operate to read and write data in their storage tracks in alternate revolutions under control of a single flip-flop receiving R pulses from 12. A counter receiving A pulses indicates the word currently available at the read-write heads, which corresponds to one of the input variables supplied to switch 30. The inputs are dealt with in turn under control of programme data from 28; in about 6 drum revolutions one of them is selected, the variable is digitized, and transferred into its appropriate word position in 32, whence it is read out on alternate revolutions to bus 34. Alarm subsystem 16 compares, in alternate revolutions, input data with reference limits recorded in 38 and records alarm signals in 40; these are available, again in alternate revolutions, on bus 42. Averaging sub-system 18 operates in similar manner to compute average values in accordance with a programme in 44 and record and make available on bus 50 the results, and computer sub-system 20 derives functions of the data available on the busses. Printer 60, which may be controlled by an independent clock as well as by programme data from 62, prints out selected data from the busses, and control sub-system 24 makes available signals for control of the process, which may for example be electrical generation from steam power.
