Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula which may contain as substituents one or more halogen atoms or alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, aralkylthio, arylthio, acyl, amino, hydroxy or carboxy groups, and salts thereof, and their preparation from a compound of formula wherein the dotted lines indicate optional double bonds and X is a dialkylamino group or a group convertible thereto, or a corresponding 5- or 11-hydroxy- or alkoxy-compound, by, in any order, dehydration and/or hydrogenation and/or conversion of a group X to a dialkylamino-group. 5 – Hydroxy – 5 – (p – dimethylaminophenyl)-10,11 – dihydro – 5[H] – dibenzo – [a ,d] – cycloheptene and its 3-methyl derivative are prepared by reaction of the appropriate dibenzocycloheptene-5-one with p-bromo-dimethylaniline and lithium. 5 – Methoxy – 5 – (p – dimethylaminophenyl)-10,11 – dihydro – 5[H] – dibenzo – [a ,d] – cycloheptene is prepared by reaction of the 5-ol with methyl iodide. The compounds of the invention have anti-depressant activity and may be used for psychotherapeutic purposes in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration, such as tablets, capsules, syrups, elixirs, emulsions and solutions.
