Abstract

Trans-1,4-polybutadiene is prepared by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a rhodium salt and 1,3-cyclohexadiene, the cyclohexadiene being present in a proportion of at least 3 mols. per mol. of rhodium salt. Rhodium salts specified are the trichloride, trinitrate, ammonium chlororhodate and sodium chlororodate. As emulsifier, those of the anionic type are preferred, for example an aryl or alkylaryl sulphonate, e.g. sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, or a sulphonated alcohol. The butadiene may be used in admixture with saturated and olefinic hydrocarbons, e.g. butane and butenes, without affecting the nature of the polybutadiene product, i.e. the butadiene is selectively polymerized.
