Abstract

3-Oxo-D 4,6-steroids in which rings A and B have the general formula are obtained by contacting the appropriate D 5-steroid starting material in which rings A and B have the general formula wherein A is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1-6 carbon atoms or an alkanoyl radical containing 2-7 carbon atoms, and the wavy lines indicate alternate a – and b -configurations, with a minimum of approximately 4 gramatoms of bromine per mole of starting material in the presence of a hydrogen bromide acceptor and a reaction solvent which is relatively inert to the reactants. Preferably an inorganic bromide salt is also present. As solvents ethers and N-substituted amides may be used. Alkali metal and alkaline earth metal carbonates and aromatic bases are suitable hydrogen bromide acceptors.
