1,040,949. Moulding hollow bodies. F. H. MALONEY CO. July 26, 1963 [Dec. 4, 1962], No. 29752/63. Heading B5A. A method of moulding hollow bodies of elastomeric materials comprises positioning a soluble core in a mould cavity, filling the cavity with uncured elastomeric material, which is then cured by heat, and dissolving out the soluble core. The core assembly comprises a support rod 56, extending through the core and beyond the diameter of the spherical cavity formed in the mould. Sleeves 58 enclose the ends of the rod and position valve anchor inserts 60. The core 54 may be formed by placing the supporting assembly within a mould, and filling the mould with soluble material and compressing it, or by moulding the sphere from a fused salt. Sodium chloride or other water-soluble salts may be used. The core may be glazed to render it impervious. The core is positioned by locating it between two mould halves 10, 12, sleeves 58 fitting in sockets 40. Elastomeric material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber or polyurethane is introduced through transfer sprues 24 from a transfer pot 16, and the mould is heated by passing steam through a passageway 42. After vulcanization, sleeves 58 are removed, the support rod 56 withdrawn and the core 54 is dissolved out, to leave the inserts 60 retained in the sphere.
