Abstract
104,369. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Koppers Co., H.). Feb. 26, 1916. Coke ovens.-Relates to apparatus for carrying out the process of combustion for the heating of coke ovens as set forth in Specification 104,368. An oven is adapted to be fired with rapidly combustible gas, such as its own gas of distillation, the air for combustion being mixed with a proportionate quantity of a neutral gaseous diluent, such as the waste products of combustion, so as to reduce the supply of oxygen. There is also provided an alternative supply of extraneously-derived gas, such as producer gas, which is slowly combustible and may be burnt with air alone, and means are provided for readily substituting one method of heating for the other. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the stack flue connexions and the means for supplying air and mixing it with a proportion of the flue gases. The fan 94 draws gases from the stack flue 82 and delivers them through the branched pipe 80, into which air is forced by a second fan 95, and the mixture is delivered through one or other of the branches 85 into one of the main flues 39 of the oven, the other flue 39 being connected to the stack flue by the cross-connexion 81, shown in dotted lines. The proportions of air and flue gases in the mixture may be varied by controlling the speed of the fans and by suitable dampers in the connexions. The mixture passes from the flue 39 into the regenerators, and thence through the ports 24, Fig. 5, to the combustion chambers 23, while distillation gas is supplied through the ports 25. The regenerators are divided into two sets of chambers a, b, Fig. 5, so that when an extraneously-derived gas is employed instead of the distillation gas of the oven, it may be passed through one set of chambers while air is passed through the other, one of each pair of ports 24 being then used for fuel gas, and the ports 25 being inoperative. The combustion chambers are elongated vertically, and the products of combustion pass out at the top into channels 37, and thence downwardly through the combustion chambers at the other side of the oven into the regenerators which are being heated up, and so to the other flue 39 and the stack flue 82. Fig. 11 shows the arrangement for admitting to the regenerators, alternatively, either air mixed with flue gases or air alone, and for controlling the escape of the heating waste gases from the regenerators to the stack flues. Such an arrangement is fitted to each division of the regenerators, the valves being connected so as to be operated simultaneously. The mixture of air and flue gases from one of the flues 39 passes through the valve 48 to the regenerator inlet 47. Air alone is admitted when required through the valve 52. The valve 48 also controls the passage of waste gases from the regenerators during heating-up, and a damper 99 is also fitted, so that the opening for waste gases may be reduced as compared to that for the entry of the mixture of air and flue gases. The valves and dampers are operated by a cable through bell-crank connexions. When it is not desired to preheat the fuel gas, the regenerators are not divided into the chambers a, b, and a single port replaces the two ports 24.
