Abstract
1,044,207. Electromagnetic contactors. CUTLER-HAMMER Inc. Dec. 24, 1963 [Dec. 24, 1962], No. 51019/63. Heading H2B. A sealed electromagnetic contactor has a two-part casing 10, 12 and posts 30 in the part 10 on which the magnet structure 14 and contact bases 18, 39 are located and secured. Series coils on parallel cores of the magnetic structure are connected by leads 14e to terminals 22 in the casing part 12. The cores are interconnected at one end by a magnetic crossmember 14b and the cores and coils are encased in a mass of epoxy resin with connecting webs 14f and 14g. Polepieces 14c have formed thereon brackets 14j for a pivot pin 52 on which the armature 16 is mounted. Web 14f supports a guide 44 for a contact actuator plunger 20 which is also guided by an opening 48c of a retaining member 48 secured on the rear posts 30. Moving contact bridges 58b on insulators 58a are biased by springs 68 between retaining clips 66 and co-operate with pairs of fixed contacts 36 in individual open-sided chambers 18c in the contact base 18. An auxiliary changeover contact bridge spring 74b on the plunger 20 co-operates with fixed contacts 39c on bases 39. A nut 50 on the plunger has flanges 50b between which ears 16a attached to the armature are located to move the plunger on attraction of the armature to the polepieces. The nut may be used to set the operating values of the contactor as also may a bushing 45, threaded in the guide 44, against which a biasing spring 60 for the plunger engages. The fixed contacts 36 extend through slots 18d in the outer walls of the chambers 18c and are rolled and welded at 36a to flexible connectors 38. The latter pass through hollow terminal posts 24b sealed in and insulated from the casing part 12 and are sealed to the terminals at the upper ends thereof. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) a single set of heavy duty main contacts are provided and the flexible connectors are secured to terminals by clamps.
