Abstract
1,044,385. Photopolymerizable elements. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS AND CO. July 25, 1963. [July 26, 1962], No. 29587/63. Heading G2C. A photopolymerizable element comprises (1) a layer 4 to 10 mils thick of a photopolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound boiling above 100‹C., (b) a photo-activable addition polymerization initiator thermally inactive below 85‹C. and (c) a polymeric binding agent, (2) a barrier layer 0. 5 to 3 mils thick obtained by incompletely polymerizing a photopolymerizable composition of (1) above but containing no thermal polymerization initiator, (3) an adhesive layer 0.1 to 1 mil thick of a copolyester composition cured with a disocyanate and (4) a flexible support. This element is produced by coating a support with the adhesive composition comprising a copolyester of ethylene glycol with terephthalic, isophthalic, adipic or sebacic acids and a polyisocyanate curing agent which may be partially cured by heating to 120‹C. before coating a photopolymerizable layer or the photopolymerizable layer may be applied to the dried, uncured adhesive layer. The preferred photopolymerizable layer is a mixture of cellulose acetate hydrogen succinate, triethylene glycol diacrylate, 2-ethylanthraquinone and p-methoxyphenol as inhibitor. This layer is overall exposed to produce the barrier layer. If this layer is applied to an uncured adhesive layer, a thermal polymerization initiator (e.g. a peroxide) is added and the element heated to produce the barrier layer and cure the adhesive layer. A photopolymerizable layer is then applied to the barrier layer and exposed to photographic transparency and the unexposed areas removed to produce a printing plate.
