Abstract

1,044,440. Photographic type-composing machines. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. April 6, 1965 [May 11, 1964], No. 14542/65. Heading B6W. [Also in Division G2] The film 20, Figs. 1 and 2, is fed intermittently linewise, when a roller 54 presses it into contact with a drive roller 56, between a convex guide member 78 and a rotatable drum 26 carrying an opaque mask 25, Figs. 1 and 8, having transparent areas representing symbols to be selectively printed arranged in laterally spaced columns 106, alternate columns being arranged in alignment with opposite halves of the drum circumference, and also transparent areas 138 each slightly staggered with respect to the corresponding line of symbols, and one area 136 defining the starting point of the drum rotation. The areas 138, 136 are arranged in the positions 58, 60 of Fig. 1. Light from a source 60 passing through the areas 138, 136 is sensed by pick-up devices 62, 64. Each column 106 is aligned with a stroboscopicallyoperated flash tube 28, and in the form described each pair of laterally adjacent columns share one of the three flash tubes 28a, 28b, 28c, which are mounted as shown in Figs. 2-7 in alignment with windows 100. During the printing of a line, the drum makes a complete revolution, and as each line of symbols (e.g. the numerals » 7 » in the three columns occupying one half of the drum surface) arrive at the print position 24, then if any of those symbols is required to be printed in that line at the position in the line in alignment with it, the corresponding flash tube or tubes is or are actuated. The tubes are actuated by drive circuitry 50 (231-233 in Fig. 9a), under the control of input information from a source 140 (e.g. a coded tape) and of control logic circuitry 36 shown in detail in Fig. 9b). The connections from the source 140 and the circuitry 36 through the various circuits shown in block form in Fig. 1, as 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48 are shown in detail in Figs. 9a and 9b. The film is fed one line in response to an end-of-line signal. After passing the print position, the film moves to a developing station 30 where it is developed by exposure to light from a source 32, the unexposed regions being desensitized by high temperature, using a heater 34. If it is desired to develop a printed line immediately, a switch can be operated to feed the film rapidly while preventing further printing. If it is desired to observe what is printed, the guide member 78 is replaced by a transparent guide element 500, Fig. 12, having a mirror 506 which reflects the image on to a surface 508, where it is retained for observation in response to an » observe » command signal. Alternatively, the film may be fed continuously in which case the spacing between the lines and the areas 138 must be varied progressively to compensate. If the mask pattern is in the form of closely spaced dots, half-tone reproductions of pictorial representations can be obtained.
