Abstract
Iron and manganese valves are oxidized and the so-treated sewage is treated with a polyelectrolyte or activated silica before filtering through a filter bed or beds grading from coarse to fine in the direction of flow. A coagulant may also be added. Exemplified oxidizing agents are air, chlorine potassium permanganate, chlorine dioxide and ozone.ALSO:Preconditioned water is filtered to remove particularly iron and manganese values in a separation bed grading from coarse (e.g. 8 to 20 mesh) to fine (e.g. 30 to 40 mesh). Two or more units may make up the beds and coarse anthracite and fine quartz sand are exemplified.
