Abstract

1,046,111. Cardiographs. K. HAMMACHER. June 6, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 22529/63. Heading ASK. In apparatus for counting heart beats the timing of predetermined points in one heart cycle is compared with that of the corresponding points of other cycles and counting continues only so long as these are in agreement. The output from a microphone 1,which is receiving heart sounds, is passed through amplifers and filters 2, 3, 4 to a controlling amplifier 5 which corrects unavoidable fluctuations in the heart sounds. The signal then passes to an amplitude discriminator 6 which produces trigger pulses in response to the two peaks in the heart cycle, and these control a flip-flop circuit 9 which, by means of its two working conditions, separates the two pulses for feeding to converters 10, 11 which give outputs the amplitudes of which are dependent on the timing of the pulses. These are in turn passed to a comparator circuit 12 and, if they are found to be correct, a recorder 16 is actuated through an amplifier 14. A square wave generator 7 is also included in the circuit to cut off the operation of the circuit 9 during the unwanted part of each cycle and so avoid fault operation resulting from noise.
