Abstract

1,046,503. Engine turning gear. J. L. GRATZMULLER. May 2, 1963 [May 10, 1962], No. 17402/63. Heading F1K. [Also in Division B7] In a diesel locomotive an auxiliary diesel engine 6 drives a generator 7 feeding a electric motor 8 capable of exerting sufficient tractive effort to start and accelerate a train to a speed at which a main diesel engine 1 can propel the train through a mechanical transmission without a slipping clutch being provided. As shown, the electric motor 8 is coupled by reduction gearing 10 and a free wheel 11 to the crankshaft of the main engine 1, which drives the locomotive wheels through a gearbox 2 and reversible gearing 4. The electric motor 8 thereby serves whilst starting the train to rotate the main engine 1 idly until fuel is supplied and then to start the main engine 1, which may be preheated by cooling water from the auxiliary engine 6. The generator 7 also feeds a circuit 13 supplying the ventilation and lubrication services of the locomotive and a circuit 14 for the train heaters, automatic or manual .switches preventing simultaneous feeding of both motor and heaters to prevent overloading of the generator 7. In another embodiment the electric motor 8 is connected by a chain drive to the shaft connecting the main engine 1 to the gearbox 2, a free wheel being interposed between the chain drive and the engine 1 so that the engine 1 is not rotated when the electric motor is driving. The locomotive may include more than one main diesel engine.
