Abstract
Aminated benzenes are produced by contacting a hydroxybenzene with an aminating agent in the presence of a catalyst selected from silicaalumina, zirconia – alumina, titania – alumina, phosphoric acid and tungsten oxide, at a temperature between 300 DEG and 600 DEG C. and under superatmospheric pressure. Hydroxybenzenes are defined as phenol and substituted derivatives, where one or more of the ring hydrogens is replaced by an aliphatic or aromatic group or both. The aminating agent is preferably ammonia but ammonium chloride, ammonium carbonate, and hydrocarbon substituted primary and secondary amines, such as methylamine, and N-methylaniline, may also be used. Thus aniline may be produced by contacting a mixture of phenol and ammonia containing 1/2 to 40 mols. of ammonia per mol. of phenol with a silica-alumina catalyst at a temperature of from 350 DEG to 500 DEG C. and a pressure of at least 7 atmospheres. Regeneration of the catalyst with an oxygen-containing stream is facilitated by the incorporation of cerium and metals of Groups Vb, VIb and VIIb, such as vanadium and tungsten, or their salts and oxides into or upon the catalyst.
