Abstract

A metal between Fe and H in the electromotive series (e.g. Ni, Co, Cd, Sn or Pb) is obtained by thermally decomposing an alkoxide of the metal. The metal may be obtained as a powder, a powdery film or as a mirror like film, e.g. on glass. The alkoxide is of the metal and of an alcohol which is (i) an alcohol containing from 8 to 28 carbon atoms and including in its molecular chain one or more residues derived from a fatty acid containing at least 8 carbon atoms (the fatty acid residue including the carboxyl carbon atom); (ii) an alcohol of the formula: or (iii) an alcohol of the formula in which formulae R’ is an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyaryl, aroxyalkyl, aroxyaryl, alkoxycycloalkyl, cycloalkoxyalkyl, hydroxalkyl hydroxycycloalkyl or a hydroxyalkoxyalkyl radical, X is oxygen or sulphur, R» is H or R’, and n is 1 or 2. In a modification, the alcohol is hexylene glycol, tatrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, triethanolamine, alphamethylolpropane, ethoxy triglycol or N,N-diethyl-aminoethanol. The alcohol may be an imidazoline condensation product. The thermal decomposition of the metal alkoxide may be at a temperature of at least 200 DEG C. In the examples the metal alkoxides are as follows:-1),3), and 6) Ni alkoxides; 2) and 4) Ni alkoxides diluted with nonyl phenol; 5) a Ni alkoxide which is heated until fluid; 7) solid Ni, Pb, Co and Cd alkoxides suspended in mineral oil; and 8) a solid Pb alkoxide dissolved in mineral oil. The preparation of alkoxides is described in the Division C2, Specification 959,043 being referred to.ALSO:Metal alkoxides are prepared by reacting (1) a divalent salt of a carboxylic acid and the metal with (2) the desired alcohol and then removing the monocarboxylic acid formed in the reaction, e.g. by distillation, as disclosed in Specification 959,043. The metals are those between Fe and H in the electromotive series, e.g. Ni, Co, Cd, Sn or Pb. Example 1 is of reacting at 205 DEG C. Ni acetate with an alcohol of the formula where n is an integer from 6 to 17. Example 5 is of heating equal molar amounts of Ni acetate tetrahydrate and nonyl phenoxy ethanol in xylene under reflux for 3 to 4 hours, stripping of solvent and heating at 205 DEG C. under vacuum to remove acetic acid. The metal alkoxides are thermally decomposed to obtain the metals (see Division C7). Further metal alcoholates specified are nickel diethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether, nickel ethylene and hexylene glycols, lead hexylene glycol, cobalt ethylene glycol, cobalt thiodiethanol, cadmium ethylene glycol and cadmium hexylene glycol. The description states that tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, ethylthioethanol, triethanolamine, alphamethylol propane, pentaerythritol dicaprate, 1,3-propane diol, ethoxy triglycol, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol mono methyl and mono hexyl ethers, and N,N-diethyl amino ethanol may also be used.
