Abstract

1,054,682. Binders for non-woven fabrics. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. April 8, 1964 [April 13, 1963], No. 14436/64. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] Binders for non-woven fabrics comprise an aqueous dispersion of at least one copolymer of: (a) at least 56% by weight of one or more esters of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid; (b) 2 to 10% by weight of N-methylolacrylamide and/or N-methylolmethacrylamide; (c) 0À1 to 4% by weight of at least one compound having two polymerizable double bonds; and optionally (d) up to 30% by weight of one or more other compounds containing a copolymerizable double bond, the percentages being with reference to the whole polymer. Monomers (a) are preferably esters of alkanols having 1 to 8 carbon atoms; a tricyclodecenyl acrylate is also disclosed (Example 6). Specified monomers (c) are diesters of (meth)acrylic acid with diols, e.g. ethanediol diacrylate and dimethacrylate, and butanediol-1,4 and hexanediol-1,6-diacrylate, vinyl (meth)acrylate, divinyl and dialkyl esters of dicarboxylic acids, e.g. adipic acid and heptadecane – 1,17 – dicarboxylic acid, allyl or methallyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid, divinyl benzene and derivatives thereof, bis-amide derivatives of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g. methylene-bis-acrylamide, butanediol-1,4 divinyl ether, ethylene glycol diallyl ether and, less desirably, dienes, e.g. butadiene, isoprene and chloroprene. Suitable as monomers (d) are acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ac – rylic and methacrylic acid and their salts and am – ides, styrene, vinyl ethers, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. The dispersions may contain emulsifiers, e.g. ethoxylated fatty alcohols which may be sulphonated, fatty alcohols, sulphonated castor oil, and alkyl aryl sulphonates and ethoxylated derivatives thereof. Other optional ingredients include protective colloids, foaming agents, antifoaming agents, waterproofing agents, dyes, fillers and polycondensation products of formaldehyde with urea or melamine and etherification products of such condensates. Also, an acidic or acid-yielding compound may be included to assist in the heat insolubilisation treatment of the binder when applied to a fibrous material; such compounds include phosphoric acid, p-toluenesulphonic acid, ammonium nitrate or oxalate, and zinc chloride. The preparation, by emulsion polymerization, of a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, butanediol – 1,4 diacrylate. acrylic acid and N-methylolacrylamide is illustrated using calcium peroxy-disulphate as catalyst.
