Abstract
1059123 Super-conductive devices WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 19 Sept 1963 [25 Sept 1962] 36876/63 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A super-conductive device comprises a material having a negative internal field, means for applying thereto a magnetic field opposing the negative internal field and means for maintaining the material below its transition temperature. Such materials normally exhibit finite resistance at cryogenic temperatures, because of the field due to localized magnetic electrons, but become superconducting when an external magnetic field within a predetermined range is applied to neutralize the internal field. Particularly suitable are alloys of the form AB 2 where A is an element having an atomic number from 57 to 71 or from 89 to 92 and B is a super-conducting element such as Os, Al, Ir, Ru. Tables of suitable temperatures and applied external fields are given for A=Gd. Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and B=Os or Ru. An embodiment suitable for building up a large magnetic field comprises a set of concentric coils 30, 31, 32, 33. The first of these is an ordinary superconductor such as Nb 3 , Sn, which is fed with current of such value that the resulting field of 100 Kgauss is within the critical field of coil 30, and which brings coil 31 (TmOs2) into its superconducting range. This is then fed with current to provide a field of 150 Kgauss which brings coil 32 (ErOs 2 ) into the super-conducting range. This is in turn fed with current to produce a field of 200 Kgauss, whereupon coil 33 (HoOs 2 ) becomes super-conducting and is fed with current to provide an ultimate field of 250 Kgauss. Under suitable conditions the super-conductive conditions may be self-sustaining the field produced by the current keeping the coil in the super-conducting state. The super-conductors may be linear instead of coiled, e.g. when used in a cryotron switching device.
