Abstract
Granular polymers and copolymers containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile are prepared by a process wherein a polymerization catalyst soluble in acrylonitrile and insoluble in water is dissolved in the starting monomer(s), the resulting solution is dispersed in the form of droplets in water used as polymerization medium, and polymerization is effected in the absence of inorganic compounds, the ratio by volume of water to the starting monomeric material being between 2:1 and 5:1 and the monomeric material being maintained by stirring in the form of droplets in the water, whereby the diameter of the polymer granules obtained is from 5 to 500 microns. Suitable catalysts include lauryl, oleyl and benzoyl peroxides. Comonomers specified are methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or isopropyl monoester of itaconic acid (where the carboxyl group adjacent to the methylene group is esterified), methyl, ethyl or n-propyl mono-ester of maleic acid, vinyl pyridine, and methyl, ethyl or n-butyl ester or amide or anilide of vinyl sulphonic or allyl sulphonic acid. A chain transfer agent, e.g. lauryl mercaptan or ethyl mercaptoacetate, may be included in the monomer phase of the reaction mixture. Instead of, or in addition to, stirring, dispersion of the monomer droplets can be maintained by the use of a substance such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol, polysodium acrylate or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Fibres and yarns can be formed from the polymers dissolved in a solvent such as dimethyl formamide.
