Abstract

1,060,983. Cyanoethylating lignocellulose pulps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 14, 1964 [May 27, 1963], No. 20201/64. Heading C3A. [Also in Division D2] A process for the cyanoethylation of lignocellulose pulp to obtain a fibrous product which can be made into a cyanoethylated paper having an improved dissipation factor comprises the steps of mixing 100 parts of the pulp with 200 parts of water and 5 to 25 parts of an alkali metal hydroxide (which is preferably dissolved in the water), adding 10 to 30 parts of acrylonitrile and mixing for 2 hours at 15‹ to 25‹ C., terminating the reaction by dilution with water while the pulp still retains its fibrous character, filtering off the pulp from the diluted reaction mixture, and then washing the pulp with water to eliminate excess alkali until the pulp has a neutral pH. Acid is not used when washing the pulp. The product may contain about 1À0 to 3À0% of nitrogen. The washed pulp may be made into paper by any desired paper-making process. The reaction may be carried out in a digester. It is preferably carried out at a temperature not below 15‹ C. and preferably between 18‹ and 20‹ C. The temperature may be 5-10‹ C. when the acrylonitrile is added to the mixture of pulp and alkali solution. Paper made from pulp treated according to the invention may be used as a dielectric in electrical apparatus and has a lower dissipation factor than paper made from cyanoethylated pulp which has been acid washed.
