Abstract

A thread winding and traversing machine is powered by a torque motor that automatically decreases in speed if the tension of the thread tends to increase whereby the thread tension is kept constant. The motor is a high resistance induction motor and it may be single phase or poly phase. Supply circuit to motor. In Fig. 14 (not shown) there are three torque motors (634 a – c) energized via a variable transformer (363) that is used to pre-set the value of said tension. In Fig. 15 (not shown) each torque motor is energized by an alternator (736) the frequency output of which is controlled by a variable speed alternator-driving motor (738) to predetermine the thread tension. An alernator field control device (740) provides additional means for pre-determining said tension. Controlling ratio of package rotation to thread traverse. In Fig. 3 (not shown) axially aligned relatively fixed gears (58, 70) of dissimilar pitch diameters interconnect a gear (54) on the package spindle (39) with a gear (72) on a spindle (52) driving a traversing mechanism. To permit the gears (58, 70) to be replaced by other gears giving a different speed ratio to the spindles (39, 52), the gears (58, 70) are mounted on a pin (60) carried by an arm (62), the arm (62) having an elongated slot (66) through which a securing bolt (64) extends. By temporarily slackening the bolt (64) the arm (62) is adjustable both angularly and radially of the bolt (64). Winding machine. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the torque motor (134) drives a yarn package (150) and also the gear (54). The gear (54), as described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown.) drives the spindle (52). On the spindle (52) is a rod reciprocating cam (78) that causes a cross head (90) to reciprocate a traverse rod (84) carrying a thread guide assembly (94). Adjusting traverse length. In Fig. 9 (not shown) the cross-head (390) is traversed by the reciprocating cam (78) described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown). Pivoted on a pin (392) carried by the cross-head (390) is a bell crank (394), one arm (398) of which engages a pin (402) whereby the traversing motion of the cross head (390) is transmitted to the traversing thread guide assembly. The other arm (416) of the bell crank (394) carries a pin (412) that slides in a groove in a track (147). The inclination of the track (147) relatively to the traverse rod (384) is adjustable by screw means (418, 420). When the axis of the track (147) is (a) along (AA) the traverse of the pin (402) is (A\sv); (b) along (BB) the traverse of the pin (402) is (B\sv); (c) along (CC) the traverse of the pin (402) is (C\sv).
