Abstract
1,063,973. Bread slicing machines. BATTLE CREEK PACKAGING MACHINES Inc. Aug. 27, 1965, No. 36858/65. Heading A4C. [Also in Division B8] A bread slicing machine comprises a plurality of parallel, inclined band saws 18 to and through which loaves are continuously fed by a system comprising three, series arranged endless conveyers 3, 6 and 7 driven from a common drive shaft 20 such that the feed conveyer 7 travels faster than the intermediate conveyer 6 and the latter in turn travels faster than the supply conveyer 3 whereby the loaves are carried at progressively increasing speed in their advance to the saws 18. The intermediate and feed conveyers 6, 7 carry tiltably mounted flights 132, 144 respectively which are spaced apart to accommodate a single loaf therebetween and are guided by plates 133, 138 to pivot outwardly to their loaf engaging positions on the top runs of the conveyers. A cam operated double gate 92, 93 is located between the supply conveyer 3 and the intermediate conveyer 6 to pivot in timed relationship with the conveyer system between a blocking position, which prevents transfer of a loaf to the intermediate conveyer 6 until there is an empty pocket ahead of a flight bar 132, and a lowered. position permitting the transfer. The gates 92, 93 are timed to move to a blocking position prior to the complete transfer of a loaf so that they assist the transfer by elevating the trailing part of the loaf. The supply conveyer 3 comprises transverse wire grids or links 83 presenting a smooth surface which facilitates their smooth sliding beneath a blocked loaf. In operation each loaf is pushed halfway through the saws 18 by a pusher flight 144 and then completely through by a following loaf. Retarding fingers 236 at the sides of the intermediate conveyer 6 serve to brake a loaf to ensure that it is fully backed against an advancing flight bar 132. A solenoid switch 155 senses the presence of a loaf adjacent the gate 92, 93 to prevent opening of the latter until a point in the cycle at which the loaf falls accurately ahead of a flight bar 132. The machine includes means for accurately centering a loaf and includes means (Fig. 4, not shown) for guiding each bandsaw 18 in such manner that the slice width may be selectively adjusted.
