Abstract

1,064,448. Automatic tuning arrangements. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 13, 1964 [May 14, 1963], No. 19891/64. Heading H3Q. In a signal-seeking, self-tuning receiver, tuning is effected by voltage-variable capacitors 8, 9, controlled by the voltage across a capacitor 11, arranged to be charged and discharged so as to sweep the receiver over its tuning range. As shown, the input and local oscillator circuits of a transistorized radio receiver are respectively tuned by variable capacitance diodes 8, 9 controlled by the voltage across capacitor 11. The tuning may be set to the high frequency end of the range by closing switch 10, charging capacitor 11. Switch 12 is then closed, enabling tuning to be swept over the range by the discharge of capacitor 11 via switching transistor 7. When the receiver is tuned to a signal, the voltage from the frequency discriminator 4 acts on a relaxation stage 6 in such a way as to open the switching transistor 7 so that the sweep is arrested, the tuning being maintained by repetitive charging and dsicharging of capacitor 11 so that the tuning oscillates over a small range at the centre of the characteristic of discriminator 4. The tuning may be swept to further channels by closing switch 12. The negative output of discriminator 4 is by-passed by diode 17, a filter 15, 16 preventing false operation due to noise.
