Abstract

NH3, H2S and HCN are removed from coke oven gas by washing the gas with an aqueous solution of pickling solution salt, i.e. FeSO4-7H2O, and then passing the gas over a purification mass, e.g. bog iron ore or Luxmasse. The crude gas may be cooled to 20 DEG to 30 DEG C. and tar and tar oils removed from the condensate which is then used for the washing solution, the gas being washed cold, or the gas may be otherwise de-tarred prior to hot washing, and subsequently cooled prior to contacting the mass. An example is described.ALSO:In a process for removing NH3, H2S and HCN from a gas by first washing the gas with an aqueous solution of pickling solution salt (FeSO4.7H2O), the H2S reacts with the iron to form ferrous sulphide which is removed from the solution along with an insoluble iron compound formed by reaction with the HCN, to leave a solution of ammonium sulphate. The removed iron compounds are dried to a water content of 10% and roasted to produce iron oxide and gases which may be worked into sulphuric acid. Alternatively, the iron sulphide may be decomposed with sulphuric acid, and the liberated H2S used to produce fresh sulphuric acid. An example is described.
