Abstract

The low-temperature ductility properties of niobium alloy containing tungsten and/or molybdenum are improved while still retaining structural stability and strength at high temperatures by heating the alloy to within the range 982 DEG C. to 1538 DEG C. and reducing the cross-sectional area of the heated alloy by plastic deformation. Examples of the alloy may include some or all of the following elements, percentages being by weight:- One or more of the following may also be included:- .Zirconium.0.2-5% .Hafnium.0.2-5% .Beryllium.0.2-5% The alloy may be encased in steel and/or molybdenum plates and its cross-sectional area reduced in two stages between which the alloy is removed from the casing and annealed in a vacuum of about 0.1 mm of mercury for one hour. After the second reduction stage, the alloy is again removed from its casing and annealed in a vacuum for 30 minutes. A tabular statement is included in the Specification listing, among other data, annealing temperatures within the range 1204 DEG C. – 1649 DEG C. and hardness numbers. Some of the hot-working temperatures listed for the reduction stage exceed 1558 DEG C., and it is stated that these approach too closely the temperatures at which recrystallization occurs during working and thus make low-temperature ductility more difficult to achieve.
