Abstract

1,065,119. Boots &c. M. WINSON and J. WINSON. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 26, 1963], No. 30870/64. Heading A3B. A foot covering made from thermoplastic sheet material comprises upper and lower portions 2, 3, joined together by a heat seal 11 using a flat die electrode, the lower portion forming at least a part of the side wall of the finished foot covering. In a first embodiment the upper portion 2 is formed from two pieces of thermoplastic sheeting joined along an instep seam 7 and a counter seam (14). A pair of these foot coverings are made together as follows: first two sole blanks 4 are heat sealed to a sheet (20) (Fig. 13, not shown). A double upper assembly is then formed from blanks (30, 31, 32) heat sealed together along the two instep seams 7. This double blank is then heat sealed along seams 11 to the double sole blank and the waste material (41a) is torn away leaving the two assemblies separate. Each assembly is then flattened and the counter seam (14) is heat sealed. The assembly is then returned to its normal shape and a heat seal (9) around the heel is formed and the excess material removed. The foot covering is then turned inside out and is ready for use. If desired the foot covering may be placed on a last and heated to a temperature of about 100F. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a ballerina type slipper is made by a similar method without an instep seam by using a single blank (15) to form the upper. In a third embodiment (Fig. 23, not shown) single upper blank is closed by an instep seam (107) and is heat sealed to a sole blank along a seam (111).
