Abstract

1,065,131. Gas chromatography. LKB-PRODUKTER A.B. April 15, 1965 [April 20, 1964; April 21, 1964; Sept. 24, 1964], No. 16411/65. Heading B1L. A separator is arranged between a gas chromatographic column and a mass spectrometer which by removing the lighter molecules, mainly the carrier gas, by diffusion through a permeable wall 9 increases the concentration of the sample substance in the carrier gas entering the spectrometer. Gas is fed from the chromatographic column through conduit 1 to a channel 12 formed by annual bodies 9 of porous material divided into the groups by a wall 6 and from each other by metal washers 10. Non-porous bodies 11 are placed at each end and a perforated stainless steel tube 7 surrounds the bodies. Chambers 4 and 5 in a cylindrical member 3 enclosing the bodies are connected by tubes 14 and 15 to vacuum pumps to quicken diffusion through the bodies 9. The gas stream may be expanded prior or after it is passed through the channel 12 by a nozzle. Gas flow control means 16 and 17 may be provided. The gas leaves the device through conduit 2 to the spectrometer.
