Abstract

1,070,181. Windscreen cleaners. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. May 7, 1964 [Feb. 22, 1963; Aug. 16, 1963], Nos. 7335/63 and 32574/63. Heading A4F. The outer surface of a window or windscreen in an aircraft, ship, or other vehicle is insulated from rain water and spray by streams of air or other gas directed approximately parallel to the surface and emanating from apertures in arms 11 of a rotor. The apertures may comprise slits so arranged that the gas issuing therethrough causes rotation of the rotor. Additional slits direct gas towards the window or windscreen surface for dispersing any water thereon. To ensure free movement of the rotor in icing conditions an electric heating element may be incorporated in the rotor hub mounting or hot air may be supplied to the rotor, heated e.g. by a heater in the air supply duct 16. For cleaning the window or windscreen in dry atmospheric conditions liquid solvent may be fed to the inside of each rotor arm. Tip jets (not shown) may be provided at the extremities of the rotor arms to assist rotation. Means may also be provided for moving the rotor to one side of the window or windscreen when not in use. The rotor may be used in conjunction with nozzle or nozzles arranged in the nose of an aircraft for discharging air to break up large raindrops into small droplets.
