Abstract

[Also in Division E1] In a step-by-step lifting mechanism 22 in which lifting is effected by relative movement of a threaded central stem 20 and a housing 28 the screw is lifted by two sets of co-operating fixed wedges 58 and pairs of sliding wedges 74, Fig. 5 (not shown), one set in an upper chamber 42 of the housing 28 and the other set in a lower chamber 44. The movable wedges 74 are driven synchronously in opposite directions by threaded rods 80 actuated by an electric motor 108 through a gear train comprising a worm 118, Fig. 2 (not shown), and worm-wheel 120 and gears 122, 128, 132, 138. Micro-switches 142 reverse the motor 108 when closed by approaching movable wedges 74. Each chamber 42, 44 has a locking gear 82 driven by an auxiliary motor 86 which is also controlled by the micro-switches 142. The arrangement is such that one of the locking gears 82 carries the load (which is attached to the stem 20) while the other locking gear 82 » follows-up,» the roles of the locking gears 82 interchanging on reversal of the motor 108 at the end of each horizontal movement of the movable wedges 74. The mechanism 22 may be used for raising concrete floors 208, Fig. 10 (not shown), during the erection of a building. For this purpose anchorage means 27, Fig. 9 (not shown), are provided. Heavy loads may be lifted by more than one mechanism 22 arranged in parallel. Cut-out safety switches 140 are provided.
