Abstract

Polymers containing units derived from monomers of the general formula in which R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represent a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl, alkyl-aryl, or aryl-alkyl group, the alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and the aryl groups from 6 to 12 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 20 are made by polymerizing under anhydrous conditions, the monomer alone, or in admixture with an acylic mono-olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon or mixtures of the above monomers, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst such as a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst, a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, or a free-radical type catalyst. Specified monomers of the above formula are 9-(4-pentenyl-1-pentene) -carbazole, 9-(4-pentenyl or 5-hexenyl or 22-tricosenyl)-carbazole, and 9-(10-phenyl-10 -undercenyl)-carbazole, a mixture of 9-(4-pentenyl and 5-hexenyl)-carbazole, and a 9-alkenyl substituted carbazole reacted with ethylene, propylene or 1-pentene to form a block copolymer, or a normal alternating copolymer, e.g. a mixture of 9-(4-pentenyl)-carbazole and 1-pentene. The polymerization is preferably effected in a liquid medium such as benzene, toluene, hexane, or methylene chloride. Specified catalysts are benzoyl peroxide, aluminium chloride, boron fluoride, stannic chloride and a titanium trichloride-diethyl aluminium chloride complex. The polymers may be fractionated using solvent extraction techniques.
