Abstract

1,075,677. Welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Dec. 17, 1963 [Dec.17, 1962 (2); Dec. 17, 1963], Nos. 47504/62 and 47505/62. Heading B3R. A tube panel is made by forming the welds in one side by gas-shielded short-circuiting are welding, reversing the panel and forming the welds on the other side by spray transfer gas-shielded arc welding. A central group of welds is made in a single pass and spaced groups of welds are made alternately on each side of the central group. The intervening spaces are then welded. The panel is reversed and groups of welds are made on the other side in reverse order. Tubes preferably ribbed may be welded directly to each other or as shown, spacing strips 3 may be interspaced between the tubes. The spacing strips 3 are located slightly off-centre of the tube panel to an extent such that the surfaces of the weld beads produced by the different above-mentioned welding techniques are equidistant from the centre line of the panel. In a machine for welding tubes 2 and spacer strips 3 to form a tube panel six welds are simultaneously made in each pass by six welding heads 42 carried in pairs on three beams 11, each suspended on parallel links 9, 10, pivoted between depending side members 6 of a support 5. Each beam 11 is resiliently pressed downwards by an adjustable spring 25 acting between a link 10 and a bar 17 fixed between the members 6. Adjustable stops 16 are provided to limit the downward movement of the beams 11. The welding heads 42 are each mounted in a block 40 pivotable about a reduced cylindrical portion 11b of a beam 11 by a screw-threaded adjuster 45 mounted on a stirrup 44 conneted to the beam 11. The welding heads 42 of each pair are oppositely directed. Resiliently mounted behind each welding head 42 is a return electrode in the form of a wheel 60 urged by a spring 71 against the tubes 2 and engaged by a spring-loaded brush 69 connected to a welding current terminal 73. Each beam 11 carries for each welding head a gas supply tube 50 located behind or in front of the electrode guide tube 42a or concentric therewith. A guide wheel 82 is mounted on each beam 11. One return electrode may serve for two welding heads. The tubes and strips to form a panel are supported on a structure comprising spaced parallel beams having arcuate recesses to receive the tubes. A gantry straddling the structure and running on rails parallel to the tubes supports a transversely movable truck. The support 5 is mounted beneath the truck and is hydraulically movable in a vertical direction. Hold-down rollers pressing on the work are similarly carried by the truck.
