Abstract

An alkyl aluminium compound is separated from liquid mixtures containing the said compound, hydrocarbons and at least one solvent by passing the mixture through a solid macro-molecular organic substance having combined atoms of oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen with electronic densities sufficient to form a covalent bond with, but not capable of degrading, the alkyl-aluminium. The mixture may be passed through the macro-molecular substance under an inert atmosphere with the aid of an inert solvent, e.g. benzene, heptane, until the hydrocarbons are washed out of the substance, the alkyl-aluminium may then be eluted with further solvent. The macro-molecular substance may be a polyether, a polythio-ether, a polynitrile or a polynitrile derivative, a polylactam, a polyester, a polyamide, a polysulphone, a polyurethane, or a polyacetal.
