Abstract
A reeled surgical suture (5) (Fig. 2, not shown) is packed between two sheets (11, 12), at least one of which (11) has a deformed dish to accommodate the suture, one end of the base of the dish gradually tapering at (13) to facilitate withdrawal of the suture when the package is opened by tearing along a line (16) across the tapered portion. As described, the suture (5) with an attached needle is wound onto tabs (7) of a cardboard disc (6), which together with a label (10) and a tubing liquid is enclosed between the sheets (11, 12), which are sealed together around the periphery of the dish at (14). The package is then packed between two superimposed transparent sheets (17, 18) (Fig. 1, not shown) secured together by a strippable seal (19), and containing a coloured sporicidal or bactericidal liquid which colours the tubing liquid if a leak in the inner package is present. Notches (15) are formed in the peripheral seal (14) to facilitate tear opening of the package, which is pre- or subsequently sterilised. In an alternative embodiment, the suture (5) may be enclosed between two dished sheets (11) (Fig. 4, not shown). The sheets (11, 12) may be of transparent unplasticised polyvinyl chloride coated with a co-polymer of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. Alternatively, the sheet (12) may be of aluminium or paper having its outer surface lacquered and its inner surface coated with polyvinyl chloride and a co-polymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl iodene chloride.
