Abstract

Ammonium phosphate (NH3:H3PO4=0.8:1 to 2.1:1), which may contain up to 20% (NH4)2SO4, is prepared by reacting phosphoric acid containing less than 60% P2O5 with NH3 gas under super-atmospheric pressure, to give a fluid ammonium phosphate solution at its boiling point containing 4-15% water, and expelling the solution into an ambient pressure zone where it loses H2O, to form a solid product. NH3 may be passed into phosphoric acid containing 30-55% by weight P2O5, and which may be mixed with H2SO4, at a pressure of 15-50 lb./m.2 giving ammonium phosphate containing 2-10% water. The soln. may be expelled into a prilling tower, or on to a conveyer belt provided with a flail-type flaker, or on to particulate solids, e.g. fertilizers and/or recycle material, and then granulated by agitation in a rotating drum or paddle mixer. Fertilizer granules may be prepared by expelling the soln. into the ambient pressure zone with a concentrated soln. of NH4NO3, and/or by spraying the soln. on to particles of fertilizer materials, e.g. NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, triple and single superphosphates KCl, K2SO4, KNO3 and potassium phosphates. Example 2 discloses a fertilizer formed by spraying 1 part of the ammonium phosphate soln. and 2-33 parts NH4NO3 soln. on to 0.7 parts KCl and 5 parts of recycled undersize or oversize ammonium phosphate.
