Abstract

1,081,565. Tandem axle suspensions. R. F. WHITEHEAD. Aug. 6, 1965 [Aug. 7, 1964], No. 33789/65. Heading B7D. A tandem axle bogey for a road vehicle comprises a pair of bracket members 61, 61A, for attachment to the vehicle chassis, welded to a transverse trunnion member 11 which has at each end a rotatable hub 20 to which is clamped a pair of leaf-spring assemblies whose down-turned ends bear upon pins supported by lugs 73, 74, 73A, 74A extending upwardly and downwardly from the tandem axles, of which the front axle 12 is live and the rear axle 15 is trailing. A pair of longitudinally disposed torsion arms 43, 43A extend laterally between the trunnion 11 and front axle 12 from downwardly depending lugs and torsion arms 24 and 51 extend centrally between the rear axle 15 and trunnion 11, and trunnion 11 and front axle 12, respectively, from upwardly extending legs. A torsion resisting wishbone member 31 extends between lugs depending downwardly from the rear axle 12 and trunnion 11. The connections between the various torsion members and the lugs may be by means of rubber bushed pins, or, in the case of the wishbone member 31, by means of shackle pins. The wheels may be single or double. The arms 36, 36A of the wishbone member may be separate or integrally connected together.
