1,081,678. Measuring fuel consumption electrically. CONOFLOW EUROPA N. V. Nov.11, 1964 [Nov.11, 1963], No.45936/64. Heading G1N. A device measuring rate of fuel consumption of a motor vehicle comprises: (a) a tacho-generator 1, Fig. 1, measuring vehicle speed, (b) a flow meter operating an interrupter contact 2, Fig. 2, giving a pulse output of which the frequency is inversely proportional to the time rate of fuel flow, and (c) integrating means which combines the two signals to indicate at 17 the average value of fuel consumption. The interrupter contact 2 is driven by a rotary flowmeter, and successive closures of the switch 2 respectively open and close a relay A, which thus operates at half the frequency of the interrupter 2. One contact a1, of the relay connects the tacho 1 signal to the base of a transistor 3, the output pulses of which vary in height with vehicle speed and inversely in width with rate of flow. The remaining contacts a2, a3, a4, of the relay A control the operation of a multivibrator consisting of relays B, C and a capacitor 12. The periods during which relays A and B are energized vary with variations in the flow rate. Certain of the contacts of relays B and C are connected so that the tacho signal pulses from transistor 3 charge a condenser 8 and a condenser 9 alternatively. While one condenser is being discharged and recharged, the other has its voltage measured by a voltmeter circuit comprising transistors 13, 14 and a meter 17. Contacts c3, c4 and b2 control the measuring and charging processes, and contacts c5, b3 and b4 control the discharging process. The remainder of the contacts of the relays B, C, are connected in the multi-vibrator circuit.
