Abstract
In a process for the isolation of cholecalciferol from a mixture obtained by irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol and subsequent conversion of the precholecalciferol obtained into cholecalciferol, the cholecalciferol is precipitated as a cholecalciferol – 7 – dehydrocholesterol complex and the cholecalciferol is subsequently separated from the complex. A solution of 7-dehydrocholesterol, e.g. in benzene, is irradiated with ultra-violet rays, the solvent is removed at reduced pressure, an alcohol, e.g. methanol, is added to precipitate unreacted 7-dehydrocholesterol, which is removed, the alcoholic solution is heated to convert precholecalciferol into cholecalciferol, 7-dehydrocholesterol is added to obtain a proportion by weight between the cholecalciferol and 7-dehydrocholesterol of 1:1, and the solution is concentrated under reduced pressure and cooled to precipitate the complex. The complex is dissolved in benzene and passed through a column of active adsorbent, e.g. aluminium oxide, which is then eluted, first with benzene and then with a mixture of benzene and ethanol to obtain a fraction containing pure cholecalciferol. An example is given.
