Abstract

Preparation of 1,1,2,2 – tetrachloroethyl sulphenyl chloride by reacting trichloroethylene with sulphur dichloride at a temperature in the range of from 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. in the presence of at least one promoter compound, which may be present in an amount of from 20 parts per million to 5 weight per cent of the reaction mixture, selected from a trialkyl-phosphate, a dialkyl-phosphochloridate, a saturated aliphatic secondary or tertiary amine or a nuclear hetero cyclic amine. Suitable trialkyl-phosphates and dialkyl-phosphochloridates may have alkyl or haloalkyl substituents each containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and preferably have C2- 4 alkyl substituents, e.g. triethyl- or tri-butyl-phosphate or diethyl-phosphochloridate. Speci fied saturated amines are represented by the formula wherein R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having from 1 to 12, preferably 1 to 6, carbon atoms and R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, are saturated alkyl groups of from 1 to 12, preferably 1 to 6, carbon atoms or, when R1 is hydrogen, poly(alkyleneamine) groups represented by the formula -(CH2CH2NH)m(CH2CH2)nH where m is an integer from 1 to 6 and n is 0 or 1. In the preferred dialkylamines the alkyl groups have a combined total of 2 to 12 carbon atoms, e.g. di-iso-propylamine, and in the preferred trialkylamines, the alkyl groups have a com bined total of from 3 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. tri-ethylamine. The preferred heterocyclic amines have a single nitrogen atom and from 4 to 8 carbon atoms, 4 or 5 of these being in the ring nucleus, and may be aromatic or saturated. The reaction may be carried out at or above atmospheric pressure optionally in the presence of an inert diluent.
