Abstract
N,N1 – Dialkyl – 4,41 – bipyridylium halide salts and N-alkyl-pyridinium halide salts are separated by extracting a mixture of the solid salts with liquid chloroform. The mixture of salts may be that obtained by the reaction of a N,N1-dialkyl – tetrahydro – 4,41 – bipyridyl and a quinone. The pyridinium salt is obtained in solution in the chloroform and the bipyridylium salt remains undissolved. The example relates to separation of N,N1-dimethyl-4,41 bipyridylium dichloride and N-methyl-pyridinium chloride.
