Abstract
A ceramic composition for making white ware comprises a plastic material and a non-plastic material which is wholly or partly a devitrified glass produced by melting together a composition consisting of at least 60% by weight SiO2, at least 20% by weight CaO and the remainder other metal oxides conventional in glass manufacture. The devitrified glass may be, for example, that described in Specifications 897,125 and 795,787. It is preferably produced by melting together sand, lime and dolomite to give a material of the analysis SiO2 68%; CaO 25%; MgO 3%; Al2O3 3%; Fe2O3< 1/2 %; K2O + Na2O< 1/2 % and crystallizing said material. The plastic material may be ball clay; porcelain compositions may be prepared from kaolin and felspar using the devitrified glass to replace the conventional quartz constituent.
