Abstract
1,090,727. Motor vehicle power units. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Dec. 30, 1964 [Jan. 9, 1964], No. 52895/64. Heading B7H. In a motor vehicle power unit comprising an engine 1 and a gear-box 6 disposed on opposite sides of differential gearing 3, a torque converter 7 coupling the engine and gear-box is disposed at the end of the gear-box 6 remote from the differential gearing 3 and includes an impeller 8 connected to the engine crank-shaft 2 by a shaft 11 extending through the gear-box shafting on a coaxial gear-box shaft line. The torque converter turbine 9 is connected to a hollow gear-box input shaft 16, and the stator ] 0 is connected by a one-way coupling 15 to a tubular member 13 secured to the gear-box casing. A hollow gear-box output shaft 22 either carries a hypoid pinion 23 meshing with the differential crown wheel 4 or drives the pinion through spur gears (Fig. 2, not shown). A gear pump 18 driven from the impeller 8 provides oil pressure for ratio selection and circulates the gear-box and/or differential oil through the torque converter 7 which is subjected to a cooling air stream to serve as an oil cooler. When the power unit is mounted at the front of a vehicle with the torque converter positioned forwardly thereof, an intake duct (Fig. 3, not shown) may be provided to direct cooling air to the converter, and the converter may include a shroud defining flow passages for the air from the duet.
