Abstract

1,091,155. Fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. April 13, 1965 [April 13, 1964], No. 15629/65. Heading G6C. A container for an assembly of nuclear fuel elements has its walls provided with longitudinally extending cavities. Each wall may be formed by a plurality of tubular members extending side by side and each sealed to the next along its length, or each wall may be formed by an outer layer, an inner layer spaced from the outer layer, and struts connecting the two layers together. The struts may be in the form of webs separating discrete passageways extending along the length of each wall, and in one embodiment are provided by a corrugated layer extending between the outer and inner layers with its crests connected to these layers. Some, at least, of the cavities may each contain a fuel element and provide flow paths through which coolant flows over the elements. The container may, for example, be hexagonal in cross-section so that when it is disposed within the reactor core it will have pairs of opposed side walls of which one is nearer to the core axis than the other. By arranging for the concentration of nuclear fuel in the fuel elements to be lower, or for the fuel elements to be of smaller cross-section, in the wall nearer the core axis, the thermal expansion of the opposed walls can be equalized.
