Abstract
1,094,515. Oil seals. MICUS IMMOBILIARUND FINANZIERUNGS-ANSTALT. Feb. 22, 1966 [Feb. 22, 1965], No. 7613/66. Heading F2B. An oil seal for a rotary shaft 18 comprises an annular rubber body 28 having an inner face which is spaced from the shaft and terminates in a sealing edge 36, an annular zone 42 adjacent the edge 36 and formed with parallel grooves inclined to the axis and a further zone 44 formed with parallel grooves inclined at a different angle to the axis. The grooves of each zone may be of different length and cross-section, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), and between them form a herring- bone pattern, Fig. 3 (not shown), suitable for both directions of shaft rotation. The sealing edge 36 is urged into engagement with the shaft 18 by a garter spring 38. The oil which leaks past the edge 36 during shaft rotation is opposed by the pumping action of either one or the other of the grooved zones 42, 44, depending on the direction of rotation. In Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the zone (44) is equal in length to the zone (42) and a lip (60) is provided to form an annulus (63) adjacent the zone (44); at high speeds, any oil leaking past the zones is pressurized in the annulus by the rotary forces to oppose such leakage. In Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the oppositely-inclined grooves are formed on separate components.
