Abstract

1,095,134. Magnetic recording media. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 18, 1965 [March 26, 1964], No. 7017/65. Heading H1H. Magnetic particles of single domain size and comprising Fe/Co alloy cores coated with Fe/Co ferrimagnetic spinel oxide substantially as described in Specification 996,913, are used in the manufacture of magnetic recording media. The alloy particles are prepared by electrodeposition into mercury as described in Specification 815,919. After deposition the particles are heat-aged in the mercury from 1 to 70 hours at 200 to 300 C. This first removes dendritic branches and then increases coercivity. Round or acicular particles may be produced depending on the state of quiencence of the Hg surface on deposition. After ageing the particles are oxidized by moist air or by a chemical agent. Residual Hg is removed by vacuum distillation, or by flotation. The particles which contain 1-15% of oxygen, are dried, milled to break up agglomerates, dispersed in a binder, applied to a support, aligned by a magnetic field and dried to form a magnetic recording medium. The cobalt to iron ratio may lie between 10-90 and 80-20. The magnetic recording medium may be a tape, disc drum, or transfer tape.
