Abstract
A coating composition is made up of aqueous lithium-sodium silicate solution; a silica sand; and a metallic or semi-metallic pigment. In the silicate solution, the mole ratio Li2O:Na2O is from 20:1 to 2:1, and the mole ratio SiO2:(Li2O + Na2O) is from 20:1 to 9.1:1. The silicate solution is prepared by adding lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and silica-containing materials, e.g. silicic acid or silica gel, to water, agitating, and heating. By semi-metallic pigment is meant particles having by weight about 50% metal around a core of talc or mica. The pigment metals may be Al, Ni, or stainless steel or other iron alloys having m.p. above 1200 DEG F. Other optional additives are: zinc dust; metal oxide pigments, e.g. oxides of Zn, Ti, Cd, Cd/Al, Co/Al, or Co/Cr; and aluminium silico-phosphate pigment. The coating compositions are applied to metal surfaces which have been sand-blasted. A wet film of the composition is applied by brushing, spraying or rolling. When dry, the thickness is 2-12 mils. The coated metal surface may be heated to up to 350 DEG F. to improve corrosion resistance. The metal surface may be carbon steel, stainless steel or «Inconel» (Registered Trade Mark).ALSO:A coating composition is made up of aqueous lithium-sodium silicate solution; a silica sand; and a metallic or semi-metallic pigment. In the silicate solution, the mole ratio Li2O:Na2O is from 20:1 to 2:1 and the mole ratio SiO2: (Li2O+Na2O) is from 2.01:1 to 9.1:1. The silicate solution is prepared by adding lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and silica-containing materials, e.g. silicic acid or silica gel, to water, agitating, and heating. By semimetallic pigment is meant particles having by weight about 50% metal around a core of talc or mica.
