Abstract

Polypropylene containing 0.001% to 3.0% by weight of a metal compound capable of forming chelate complexes is dyed and/or printed using monoazo dyes of the general formula:- wherein X is hydrogen, a carboxylic acid group, an alkyl group or an aryl group; and Y is a radical derived from a coupling component free from ionic water solubilising groups, e.g. a phenol, enol, pyrazolone or an N, N\sv dialkylaniline radical free from complex forming groups. The Y radical may bear non-ionic substituents e.g. alkyl, cycloalkyl aryl, alkoxy, halogen or acylamino groups. The metals used which are present in the form of organic or inorganic compounds are Cr, Ni, Zn, Co, Cu, Cd and Al. Dyeing preferably at pH 4 to 5 using acetic acid may take place at 70 DEG – 130 DEG C from a long liquor or by impregnation with a short liquor at room temperature, drying at 70 DEG to 100 DEG C and then heating to 130 DEG C. The liquors may contain the conventional dispersing and emulsifying agents. Printing may take place by conventional film, screen or roller printing. Many examples of the dyes used are specified.
