Abstract
1,095,263. Electric motors; electromagnetic coupling. PLESSEY-UK Ltd. March 17, 1965 [March 17, 1964], No. 11117/64. Heading H2A. An electromagnetic device of the kind capable of transferring reciprocatory movement into interrupted unidirectional movement comprises an electromagnet structure and two associated armatures having teeth which face one another and arranged so that in response to the successive energization and de-energization of the electromagnetic structure and the simulataneous reciprocation of a first of said armatures a second armature is caused to be stepped unidirectionally. In Fig. 2 the first armature 4 is mounted between stops 7, 9 and both armatures are situated between the poles of an electromagnet. When the magnet is energized the armature 4 is attracted between the poles until it contacts stop 9. To maintain the low reluctance path established by the teeth of the armatures armature 3 is also moved with armature 4. As the magnet is de-energized armature 1 is returned by a spring 8 whereas armature 3 remains in position. A detent (Fig. 5, not shown) preventing any wander of armature 3 may be used. Armature 4 may also be reciprocated, by external means (Fig. 1, not shown). Rotary unidirectional movement may be provided by having two concentric armatures housed in a cylindrical magnet having a central core (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). The two armatures may have differing numbers of teeth (Fig. 6, not shown), the magnet may be provided with teeth (Figs. 4, 7, 8, not shown) and a tapered air gap 35 (Fig. 8, not shown) may be provided between the teeth of an armature 16 and the teeth 11 of the magnet. Fig. 7 illustrates a rotary motor wherein the first armature comprises two discs 25, 27 axially separated and housed in a cylindrical magnet having windings 24 situated between the discs. One disc 25 co-operates with radial teeth 29 of the magnet to create the reciprocating motion whereas the other disc rotates the second armature 32, situated between the disc and the magnet, unidirectionally. The second armature is connected to a shaft 34.
