Abstract

A composition suitable for spinning with polyacrylonitrile to produce bicomponent fibres in which the two components are in side-by-side relation along their length comprises 25 parts by weight of a terpolymer containing by weight 93.6% of acrylonitrile, 6% of methyl acrylate and 0.4% of sodium styrene sulphonate, and 75 parts by weight of a copolymer containing by weight 96% of acrylonitrile and 4% of sodium styrene sulphonate.ALSO:A composition suitable for treating synthetic textile fibres consists of paraffin wax and at least one salt of a partial ester of phosphoric acid. Alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, amine or quaternary ammonium salts of the mono- and/or di-phosphoric acid esters made from fatty alcohols or alkyl phenols condensed with an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, may be used, the preferred esters being those produced from lauryl or decyl alcohol condensed with 2-10 mols alkylene oxide, tetradecyl, hexadecyl or hexadecenyl alcohol condensed with 4-16 mols alkylene oxide, nonyl or decyl phenol condensed with 4-16 mols alkylene oxide and octyl phenol condensed with 3-14 mols alkylene oxide. The composition may contain 1.25-1.75 parts by weight of the salt of the phosphoric acid ester per part of paraffin wax. The treating composition may be prepared by heating together the salt of the phosphoric acid ester and a paraffin wax melting at 50-55 DEG C. and pouring the resultant mixture into water with vigorous agitation.ALSO:A composition suitable for treating synthetic textile fibres comprises an aqueous dispersion containing paraffin wax and at least one salt of a partial ester of phosphoric acid. Alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, amine or quaternary ammonium salts of the mono- and/or diphosphoric acid esters made from fatty alcohols or alkyl phenols condensed with an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, may be used, the preferred esters being those produced from lauryl or decyl alcohol condensed with 2-10 mols alkylene oxide, tetradecyl, hexadecyl or hexadecenyl alcohol condensed with 4-16 mols alkylene oxide, nonyl or decyl phenol condensed with 4-16 mols alkylene oxide and octyl phenol condensed with 3-14 mols alkylene oxide. The composition may contain 1.25-1.75 parts by weight of the salt of the phosphoric acid ester per part of paraffin wax. The treating composition may be prepared by heating together the salt of the phosphoric acid ester and a paraffin wax melting at 50-55 DEG C and pouring the resultant mixture into water with vigorous agitation.ALSO:Synthetic textile fibres are lubricated and rendered antistatic by applying thereto a composition comprising paraffin wax and at least one salt of a partial ester of phosphoric acid. The treating composition may be prepared by heating together the salt of the phosphoric acid ester and a paraffin wax melting at 50 – 55 DEG C and pouring the resultant mixture into water with vigorous agitation. The aqueous dispersion may be applied to filaments by spraying or roller coating so that 0.1 – 0.8% by weight of composition is applied and the filaments then converted to staple which is made into yarns and knitted into fabrics which do not pill. Bicomponent acrylic fibres in which the components are in side-by-side relation along their length, one of the components being a polyacrylonitrile polymer and the other being a mixture of a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and sodium styrene sulphonate and a copolymer of acrylonitrile and sodium styrene sulphonate, may be treated, the fibres optionally being crimped in a stufferbox crimper after treatment and prior to converting them into staple.
