Abstract

The invention relates to compounds of the general formula wherein X is halogen and R is ethyl, n-propyl or isopropyl. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a half alkyl ester-half acid or half alkyl ester-acyl halide of 2,3,5,6-tetrahaloterephthalic acid, wherein the alkyl group contains from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, with an alcohol containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms or reacting the half acid or its salt with an alkylating agent wherein the alkyl group contains from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, the alcohol or alkylating agent being selected so that the compound obtained contains exactly one carbomethoxy group. The half acyl halide may be obtained by halogenating a half alkyl ester-half acid of 2,3,5,6-tetrahaloterephthalic acid, wherein the alkyl group contains from 1 to 3 carbon atoms. In an example dimethyl 2,3,5,6-tetrachloroterephthalate is reacted with potassium hydroxide to produce the half-ester acid 4-carbomethoxy 2,3,5,6-tetrachlorobenzoic acid which is then treated with thionyl chloride to produce 4-carbomethoxy – 2,3,5,6 – tetrachlorobenzoyl chloride which when heated with ethanol yielded methyl ethyl 2,3,5,6 – tetrachloroterephthalate. Similarly, methyl isopropyl 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalate can be obtained from dimethyl 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalate, potassium hydroxide, thionyl chloride and isopropanol.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprises as active ingredients a compound of the general formula in which X is halogen and R is ethyl, n-propyl or isopropyl together with an inert carrier and/or a defoliant, a dessicant, a growth inhibitor and/or another herbicidally active compound, many being specified. The composition may be in the form of solids, e.g. dusts, granules, or wettable powders, or liquids such as solutions, aerosols or emulsifiable concentrates.
