Abstract

1,102,638. Treating polylactones; moulding thermoplastics. SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 25 Aug., 1966 [27 Aug., 1965], No. 38209/66. Heading B5A and B5B. An article is made from a linear polylactone having a crystallinity of at least 50% by subjecting the polymer, at a temperature below its m.p., to a mechanical pressure of such magnitude as to cause flow. The polymer may be a preformed article, e.g. a film, sheet, bar, or plate, or may be in powder or granule form which is moulded into a shape by the process of the invention, e.g. a plate, disc or tubular film. Preformed articles so treated are heatshrinkable. The pressure may be applied by rollers, by hammering, by pressure-moulds or by cold-extrusion presses. Specified lactones have two 1-4C alkyl groups on the α-carbon atom, e.g. α-methyl-α-ethyl-; α-methyl-α-isopropyl-; α,α-dimethyl-; and α-ethyl-α-n-butyl- #-propiolactones. Other compounds, e.g. expoxy compounds may be copolymerized with the lactones, which may themselves be homo- or copolymers.
