Abstract

A porcelain tooth is primed with a hydrolystate of a material selected from (1) compounds of the general formula , wherein D is a hydrolysable group or atom, n is 1, 2, or 3, b is 0, 1, or 2, n+b is 1, 2, or 3, R111 is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical, R is C1-4 alkylene, c is 0 or 1, A is or radical (A being when c is 0) wherein R1 is an aliphatic radical composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, the oxygen atoms being present in the form of ether linkages and/or hydroxyl groups, and the ratio of carbon to oxygen atoms is R1 being not greater than 3 to 1, a is 0 or 1, R11 is H, Me, or wherein X is H or a C1-6 hydrocarbon radical or a radical and Q is H or phenyl -CH=CH.CH3 or , and (2) co-polymers of the above compounds with an unsaturated organic monomer. The primed porcelain teeth may be chemically bonded to an acrylic denture base material, e.g. a blend of an acrylate and a room-temperature-vulcanising silicone rubber. Any desired technique may be used to apply the primer, which may be applied as a solution in water or an organic solvent. The primed teeth may be incorporated into the denture using conventional techniques. The denture may in addition contain pins and holes for anchoring the teeth. The primer material, or hydrolysate thereof, may be added to the acrylic denture base material prior to moulding, in which case the porcelain teeth are primed in situ during the cure of the denture. Exemplified hydrolysable groups D include methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, isopropoxy, formyloxy, acetoxy, propionoxy, -O(CH2)zOCH3, -O(CH2)2OH, or a chlorine or bromine atom. Examples of suitable unsaturated organic monomers are acrylates, maleates, itaconates, fumarates and acrylonitrile.
