Abstract

Monomethin-, carbo-, dicarbo-, tricarbo and mero-cyanine dyes are prepared by quaternization of 2-methyl benzazoles of the formula where X represents oxygen or sulphur and Y is attached to positions 5 or 6 of the benzazole ring, the benzene moiety of which may also be substituted by a methoxy group, and represents where R is a hydrogen or halogen atom, quaternization being effected by known methods using alkyl halides, dialkyl sulphates, alkyl-p toluenesulphonates, aliphatic sulphones or aliphatic a -halogenocarboxy acids and the quaternary salts thus obtained being subjected to condensation with reagents known in cyanine dye chemistry, e.g. orthoesters, diaryl-formamidines, alkylmercapto- and halogeno-azoles or quinolines, acetanilidovinyl-, acetanilidomethylene-, butadienyl and hexatrienyl derivatives of quaternary heterocyclic salts and acetyl-, propionyl-, benzoyl-, triacetyl-, thiopropenyl-, thiobenzoyl-methylene benzo- or naphtho-thiazolines and selenazolines. Examples 1-9 relate to the preparation of specific dyes.ALSO:The invention comprises benzoazoles of the formula wherein X represents an oxygen or sulphur atom and Y is attached to the 5- or 6-position of the benzoazole ring and represents the radical wherein R represents hydrogen or halogen, the benzene moiety of the benzoazole nucleus being optionally substituted by a methoxy group. The compounds are made by heating the appropriate 6- or 5-amino-2-methyl-benzoazole with benzaldehyde, or a halogenated benzaldehyde, followed by reaction with thioglycotic acid. The benzoazoles may be used in the preparation of cyanine dyes (see Division C4). Examples relate to the unsubstituted, halogenated and methoxy-substituted compounds.
